How Your Body Actually Clears Things
You already have a clearance system, it runs continuously, and it is considerably more sophisticated than anything sold to support it. Understanding how it works is also the fastest way to see which products are nonsense.
The liver, in two phases
Phase one
A family of enzymes modifies the compound, usually by adding a reactive site so that something can be attached to it in the next step. Worth knowing that the intermediate produced here is often more reactive than what went in, not less. Phase one on its own is not detoxification.
Phase two
Something water-soluble is attached to that reactive site, which makes the whole thing safe to transport and excrete. This step requires raw materials, chiefly amino acids from protein, sulfur compounds, and a range of B vitamins.
This is the step that nutrition genuinely supports, and it is the honest version of what detox products are gesturing at.
The step everyone forgets
The packaged compound goes into bile, into the intestine, and out. If transit is slow, or if certain gut bacteria unwrap the package, it is reabsorbed instead of leaving.
So the liver can be working perfectly and clearance can still fail, at the last step, in the gut. This is also exactly how estrogen is handled, which is why the same mechanism appears in perimenopause.
The kidneys
Water-soluble compounds are filtered and excreted in urine. The requirement here is adequate hydration and functioning kidneys. Not special water, not alkaline water, not more water than you want. Adequate.
Sweat, honestly
You will see claims that sweating is a major route of elimination. The honest position: sweat does contain trace amounts of some compounds, including certain metals and bisphenols, and this has been measured.
But the quantities are small relative to what the liver and kidneys handle, and sweat is primarily thermoregulation rather than excretion.
Saunas have reasonable evidence behind them for cardiovascular health and for how people feel. That is a decent reason to use one. Detoxification is not, and the industry built on that claim is selling something the physiology does not support.
What actually supports clearance
- Enough protein. Phase two runs on amino acids. This is the most commonly missing piece.
- Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts. There is real mechanistic support here.
- Fiber, in quantity. It binds packaged compounds in the gut so they leave rather than recirculate, and it feeds the bacteria that keep that step working.
- Regular bowel movements. Unglamorous and central. Anything sitting in the intestine is available for reabsorption.
- Sleep. Clearance processes, including in the brain, are more active during sleep.
- Less alcohol. It competes directly for the same liver capacity. This is the one with the largest effect and the least appeal.
What does not
Juice cleanses, which remove the protein phase two depends on. Foot pads. Coffee enemas, which carry real risk and no benefit. Most binders taken without a specific indication. Anything promising to flush your liver, an organ that does not require flushing.
