  • The One Toxin Nobody Wants to Talk About

    If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve already made real changes. You’ve swapped your cookware. You filter your water. You read labels on your cleaning products and your skincare. You’ve done the work.

    So let me ask you something.

    When was the last time you looked at your wine glass the same way you look at a plastic water bottle?

    Most of us never do. We’ve filtered out the “toxic” language when it comes to alcohol, even while we’re applying it to nearly everything else in our homes. And that’s worth pausing on, because alcohol isn’t separate from the toxic burden conversation. It’s part of it.

    The Story We Were Told

    For years, the message was consistent and reassuring: a glass of red wine is good for your heart. Moderate drinking is fine, maybe even beneficial. Having one drink a day is better than having none at all.

    That story is being rewritten.

    In recent years, the U.S. Surgeon General called for cancer warning labels to be added to alcoholic beverages, a significant shift, since it marks one of the first major public health steps toward telling people plainly that alcohol, in any amount, isn’t something to think of as “healthy.” This isn’t a wellness-industry opinion. It’s a signal that the evidence has moved.

    I’m not telling you this to create fear or to tell you to never drink again. That’s not how I approach anything in this work, and it’s not how I’m going to start now. But I do think it’s time we talked about alcohol the same honest way we talk about everything else that adds to your body’s load.

    What Alcohol Actually Does Once It’s In Your Body

    Here’s the piece that doesn’t get talked about enough.

    When you drink, alcohol is absorbed quickly and travels throughout your body, including your brain, which is why you feel it so fast. But the more important story is happening in your liver.

    Your liver has to break alcohol down, and in that process, it converts into a compound called acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is toxic, and with repeated exposure over time, it has the potential to damage DNA and drive inflammation in the body’s tissues.

    At the same time, alcohol disrupts the balance of bacteria in your gut and affects the integrity of the gut barrier. If you’ve followed my work at all, you know this is where I always start, because the gut is foundational. When alcohol throws off that balance, it can trigger inflammation that doesn’t stay contained to your digestion. It shows up in your skin, your mood, and your overall resilience.

    And then there’s sleep. Even a single drink can interfere with sleep quality, and sleep is one of the primary ways your body repairs and clears out what it doesn’t need. When sleep is disrupted, everything downstream, energy, hormones, inflammation, has to work harder to keep up.

    This is exactly the pattern I talk about with environmental toxins. It’s rarely one dramatic exposure. It’s the repeated, cumulative load that adds up quietly over time.

    The “Just One Glass” Problem

    Here’s something that surprises most people.

    A standard drink is smaller than what most of us are actually pouring. A true serving of wine is 5 ounces. Many wine glasses hold 8 ounces or more, which means two glasses from a larger glass can add up to closer to three standard drinks, not two.

    The same is true for beer and spirits. A light beer and a double IPA are not the same “one drink.” A generous pour over a single ice cube is often more than a single shot.

    None of this is about guilt. It’s about awareness. Most people are drinking more than they think simply because of how servings are measured out in real life, not in a lab.

    Rethinking Alcohol’s Place in Your Load

    I want to be clear about something. This isn’t about telling you alcohol is evil or that you need to eliminate it completely. That kind of fear-based thinking isn’t useful, and it isn’t how I approach any part of this work.

    What I want you to walk away with is this: alcohol adds to your cumulative toxic burden the same way ultra-processed food, synthetic fragrance, or plastic exposure does. It’s not separate from that conversation. It’s part of it.

    And here’s why that matters for the work we do together. You can make every swap in your kitchen, filter every glass of water, and clean up every product in your bathroom, and still be asking your liver and your gut to work overtime every single night if alcohol is a daily habit. Foundation work only holds if we’re honest about everything that’s asking your body to adapt, not just the parts that are easy to talk about.

    What You Can Actually Do With This

    You don’t have to decide today whether you’re a “drinker” or “not a drinker.” That’s not the point.

    A few places to start, if you want to:

    • Get honest about your actual pour. Measure a real 5-ounce glass once. Most people are surprised.
    • Notice the pattern, not just the amount. Are you reaching for a drink to unwind, to celebrate, out of habit? Naming the why gives you more choice, not less.
    • Space it out. A few alcohol-free days a week gives your liver and gut a chance to actually catch up.
    • Watch your sleep the next morning. Let your own body be the data. You’ll likely notice the connection faster than you expect.

    This is the same approach I take with every part of toxic load: not perfection, not fear, just enough awareness to make an intentional choice instead of a default one.

  • Why Your Labs Are Normal, But You Don’t Feel Normal

    You’ve sat across from a doctor and heard the words “everything looks fine.”

    Your bloodwork came back normal. Nothing alarming on paper. And yet you’re exhausted in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Your digestion isn’t what it used to be. Your skin flares for no clear reason. You feel like you’re working harder than you used to just to feel okay.

    If that sounds familiar, I want you to know two things. First, you’re not imagining it. Second, there’s usually a reason your labs and your reality don’t match, and it’s rarely the reason people expect.

    The Body Wasn’t Built for This

    For most of human history, exposure to harmful substances was occasional. A contaminated water source. A specific plant. An isolated hazard at work. The body encountered a threat, responded to it, cleared it, and returned to balance.

    That’s not the world we live in anymore.

    Today, exposure isn’t occasional. It’s constant, layered, and cumulative. The air in your home, the water you drink, the food you eat, the products on your skin and in your cleaning cabinet, all of it delivers a steady, low-level stream of chemical exposure. Individually, none of it is dramatic enough to cause immediate illness. But your body doesn’t experience these exposures individually. It experiences them all at once, day after day, for years.

    This is what’s often referred to as cumulative exposure, or your total toxic burden.

    Why This Doesn’t Show Up on a Standard Lab

    Here’s the piece that explains the disconnect you’re feeling.

    Toxic burden doesn’t build the way an infection or a broken bone does. It doesn’t tend to announce itself with a single, dramatic event that lands you in a doctor’s office with an obvious diagnosis. It builds quietly first, long before anything shows up on a standard panel.

    The earliest signs are subtle. Energy that doesn’t fully bounce back, even with rest. Recovery that takes longer than it used to. A digestive system that’s more sensitive than it once was. Feeling more anxious or emotional, and you just blame it on your hormones. You are simply not feeling like yourself.

    These changes are easy to dismiss. They get chalked up to aging, to stress, to just being busy. And because they don’t show up as a clear abnormality on standard labs, they often go unaddressed, sometimes for years.

    But underneath that reassurance, something real is happening. Energy production is straining. The immune system is becoming less precise, sometimes overreacting to things that shouldn’t bother it, sometimes underperforming when it’s actually needed. Low-grade inflammation, the kind that doesn’t cause a fever but quietly alters how you feel and function, is building.

    And this is where genetics plays a role, not as destiny, but as direction. The same cumulative load doesn’t affect everyone the same way. For some people, this strain shows up first in cardiovascular symptoms. For others, it’s metabolism, immune balance, or cognitive fog. Your genetics often determine where the pressure shows up first, which is part of why two people in the same environment can have completely different experiences.

    This window, the one before diagnosis, is exactly where the opportunity for meaningful change lives. Not because something is wrong with you, but because your body has been asking for support long before it had a name for what was happening.

    This Isn’t About Fear

    I want to be really clear about something, because this topic can easily tip into alarm, and that’s not useful to anyone.

    This isn’t about convincing you that the world is dangerous or that you need to eliminate every possible exposure from your life. That’s neither realistic nor necessary for health. It’s also not the goal.

    The goal is simply this: to help you understand what’s actually driving what you’re feeling, so you can stop assuming it’s just aging, or just stress, or something you have to live with. Once you understand what’s underneath the symptoms, you can start making decisions instead of guessing.

  • The Two Things Every Woman in Midlife Needs More Of – and Almost Nobody Is Getting

    If you read my last post, you know where I stand on weight loss as a goal. Stop chasing it. Start building muscle. The framework most women have been given is wrong for their physiology, their hormonal environment, and this stage of their life.

    But the most common question I get after that conversation is the practical one.

    Okay. I hear you. So what do I actually need to do?

    The answer, at its most fundamental level, comes down to two things. Two things that are both remarkably well-supported by research, both profoundly underutilized by midlife women, and both capable of changing the trajectory of your health in ways that go well beyond the gym.

    Protein. And creatine.

    Not as the whole picture — the foundation matters, the training matters, the hormonal environment matters. But as the two inputs that most women are chronically under-consuming, and that have the most immediate and meaningful impact on muscle preservation, metabolic health, and — this is the part most people are not talking about — brain function.

    Let’s go through both.

    Protein: The Most Important Shift You Can Make

    To build and maintain muscle, your body needs one thing above almost everything else: adequate protein. Not moderate protein. Not the amount that has historically been recommended for general health. Meaningful, consistent, strategically distributed protein — at a level most women are nowhere near consuming.

    Current research has raised the recommendation to approximately 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for women focused on muscle preservation and building. For most women, that number is significantly higher than what they are currently eating — particularly those who have been in an undereating pattern for years.

    But quantity is only part of the picture. Three things matter equally:

    Quality. Leucine — one of the essential amino acids — is the primary trigger for muscle protein synthesis. It acts as a metabolic switch. Without sufficient leucine at a meal, the muscle-building signal does not fully activate regardless of how much total protein is consumed. Animal-based proteins — meat, fish, eggs, dairy — tend to have the highest leucine content and the most complete amino acid profiles. This does not mean plant proteins have no value. It means that if you are relying primarily on plant sources, the strategy for hitting your leucine threshold needs to be deliberate.

    Distribution. Spreading protein intake across meals produces significantly better muscle-building outcomes than concentrating it in one sitting. Your body can only utilize so much protein for muscle synthesis at a time. Three or four protein-anchored meals across the day is more effective than one large protein-heavy meal regardless of the total amount consumed.

    Consistency. This is the piece that most approaches miss. Muscle protein synthesis is not a one-time event. It requires consistent, repeated signaling — meal after meal, day after day. The women who build and maintain muscle in midlife are the ones who make protein the non-negotiable anchor of every meal, not something they remember on some days and forget on others.

    What this looks like in practice: protein is not the afterthought on the plate. It is the starting point around which everything else is built. This shift alone — before anything else changes — moves the needle for most women.

    Creatine: The Supplement Almost Nobody Is Talking About — and Almost Everyone Should Be Taking

    If there is one supplement recommendation I make consistently to midlife women, it is creatine monohydrate. Not because it is trending. Because the evidence behind it is extensive, the benefits are real, and almost none of the women who come to see me are taking it.

    Let me explain what it actually does — starting with the piece most people know, and moving to the piece most people don’t.

    In the muscle:

    Creatine increases the availability of phosphocreatine — the rapid energy source your muscles draw on during resistance training. More phosphocreatine means more output per session, better recovery between sessions, and over time meaningfully better muscle-building results from the same training effort.

    For women who are doing the work — lifting consistently, training with intention — creatine makes that work more effective. Not dramatically, not overnight, but measurably and consistently over time. In a perimenopausal woman who is already fighting against declining estrogen’s anabolic support, that compounding benefit matters.

    In the brain:

    This is the conversation that is almost entirely absent from how creatine gets discussed — and it is the one I want every midlife woman to hear.

    Your brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in your body. It accounts for roughly 20 percent of your total energy expenditure despite being only about 2 percent of your body weight. And creatine plays a direct role in cerebral energy metabolism — supporting the ATP production that keeps cognitive function running at full capacity.

    Research increasingly links creatine supplementation to meaningful improvements in working memory, mental processing speed, and cognitive resilience — particularly under conditions of sleep deprivation, high cognitive demand, and chronic stress. All three of which describe the daily reality of most midlife women.

    If you have been experiencing brain fog that lifts some days and returns without warning — word-finding difficulty, mental fatigue that arrives before the afternoon is over, the sense that your thinking is simply not as sharp as it used to be — the brain benefits of creatine are directly relevant to you. They are real. They are evidence-based. And they are almost never part of the conversation you are having with your physician.

    Specifically in perimenopause:

    Estrogen plays a role in your body’s natural creatine synthesis. As estrogen declines through the perimenopausal transition, that synthesis may decrease — making dietary and supplemental creatine more important at precisely the stage of life when most women are not thinking about it.

    The women who enter their 50s and 60s with strong, resilient bodies are almost always the women who started prioritizing muscle in their 30s and 40s. Not after the diagnosis. Not when the decline becomes obvious. During the window when the intervention still has maximum impact.

    Adequate protein and consistent creatine are two of the most evidence-based, accessible, and immediately actionable steps you can take during that window. Not instead of the foundational work — alongside it.

    A Note on Estrogen

    Hormone therapy and muscle building are not separate conversations. Estrogen’s anabolic role means that addressing hormonal decline thoughtfully — when appropriate and indicated — makes the protein and creatine work more effective. They are part of the same foundational picture.
